Founder J.J. de Kroes, was born on January 1st 1806 in the city of Schiedam, close to Rotterdam. Uncles from both sides of the family were already registered as independent bakers in the 18th century, as discovered in public historic archives.
In 1821 J.J. de Kroes moves to the old city of Gorinchem to live and work with his brother who owns a local bakery in the Hoogstraat.
1849: a mile stone in the history of De Kroes. J.J. de Kroes acquires the bakery in what is now called the Gasthuisstraat.

The acquisition takes place after his employer, for whom he worked for almost 15 years, passes away. The bakery is taken over for the amount of 2.125,- Dutch guilders.
On July 7th 1892 "De Gulde Capel" becomes an officially registered brand used for the "Gorcumsche Zoute Bollen", the first savoury biscuits produced by De Kroes. This product, which became the local specialty of the city of Gorinchem, is still produced exclusively by De Kroes.
New legislation brought along the establishment of the Chambre of Commerce in which De Kroes was registered on April 13th 1921.

Although the De Kroes family has withdrawn from its active participation in the company, faithful employees continue the success story of De Kroes and its products.
A poem published in a local newspaper on March 16th 1955 shows the local heritage of the "Zoute Bollen".

It is only in the 5th generation of De Kroes that a member of the family takes over the management of the company again. Pieter Galle starts his successful career at De Kroes on January 1st 1976 and transforms the company into a modern savoury biscuits producing company over the next few decades.
The company leaves the city of Gorinchem in 1982 to open its new production facility in Werkendam. Filled savoury Wafers and a wide range of savoury Biscuits are added to the assortment.
A brand new invention, the Mini Choux were launched by De Kroes in 1996 and rewarded with several awards over the next few years.

Just before the turn of the century, in 1999, De Kroes opened its state of the art production facility in Oosterhout. Today some 100 employees produce a wide range of tasty bakery products.
A new era recently begun when Pieter Galle retired from De Kroes.

On January 1st 2006 De Kroes was officially taken over in a management buy out by its current directors Henri Verhagen and Johan Bouman. Together with the entire team at De Kroes they are working on new chapters in the company’s history.

January 2010 De Kroes bv has acquired a majority share in the French company Semur Feuilletage. A specialist in the manufacturing of, puff pastry based, sweet and savoury products. The new company name will be De Kroes Feuilletage, as a whole integrated in our organisation De Kroes B.V.
